This”special project shows us your passion and creativity by expressing to us how much you want to go to this conference. Not to worry, special projects are fun, as people in the past have made Dioramas, Treasure Maps, Powerpoints, Scrapbooks, and even Cupcakes! We are open minded and accept your efforts in any form. The GAAPS Conference was established ten years ago by the Asper School of Business Accounting Association in conjunction with CGA Manitoba. Currently this event still provides an opportunity for students to compete in an accounting focused case competition. However, the conference also includes interactive sessions where guest speakers discuss relevant accounting topics and issues, as well as a gala dinner featuring a guest speaker in the accounting field.

In the past three years, the GAAPS conference has grown from an exclusively University of Manitoba conference, to last year’s conference which saw the presence of seven universities from three provinces: University of Manitoba, Assiniboine College, University of Calgary, Lakehead University, University of Toronto, Windsor University, and University of Waterloo. This year, ASBAA plans to build on this success and host even more teams from Manitoba, as well as from the rest of Canada. In order to accommodate the interest in the event GAAPS has been expanded from the usual two day event to three days. Furthermore, the event has been relocated from the University of Manitoba to a prestigious downtown hotel.

Mission:

DBCS targets some of the brightest students from universities across North America to gather a multilateral perspective on issues related to sustainability. The conference invites leading experts from corporations, non-government organizations and academia to speak to students and provide them with the tools and knowledge they need to help ensure a sustainable future. DBCS focuses on the three realms of sustainability that affect and are affected by business practices: social, economic and environmental.

Achievements:

Highly anticipated among post- secondary students, MBCS has developed a reputation for gathering a large and inspiring forum of individuals each year. From the students and future leaders in business to the speaker panels, we are growing into one of the most distinguished business conferences on sustainability among Canadian universities. The 2008 “Looking Backward to Move Forward” conference brought Dr. David Suzuki to speak to over 700 students, parents, professors and business professionals. The confer- ence was responded to with strong interest from the Montreal community, which stirred up both national and local media coverage. This provided us the momentum we needed to further improve for the “Awake” conference in 2009, which took on a more diverse perspective and included keynote addresses by Steven Guilbeault of Équiterre and Robert Weiss of GE Canada.

The Queen’s Finance Association Conference (QFAC) is an event like no other: it is Canada’s first student-run conference entirely focused on finance and the capital markets. The Impact Entrepreneurship Group is Canada’s largest non-profit, student-run organization dedicated to encouraging the entrepreneurial spirit amongst youth in Canada and becoming a starting point and catalyst for youth interested in entrepreneurship and leadership. Since 2004, Impact has developed programs both at the national and local level and in the last year alone, we reached over half a million young people. Consisting of over 100 student volunteers nationwide, Impact is dedicated to driving the entrepreneurial spirit.

What does it mean to us?

When most people hear the word entrepreneurship; they automatically assume it has to involve starting a business. Contrary to this commonly accepted definition, Impact believes the term embodies something bigger – a mindset towards life that can help achieve any dream, no matter what it is. Impact promotes the entrepreneurial spirit, an attitude and way of life which embodies 3 key components: ambition, passion and determination.

Why is it important?

Entrepreneurship in Canada is not being encouraged or promoted enough among today’s youth in the current education system. As students move through school, there is a lot of pressure to maintain grades, pursue higher education and an ideology of finding a corporate position after graduation. However Impact believes that students should be their own boss and explore the field of entrepreneurship.

There are many organizations that provide support, mentorship, and basic resources for entrepreneurs. However, youth are largely unaware these resources exist and together with general misconceptions, they are not as apt to choose entrepreneurship as a viable career path. Entrepreneurship in Canada needs to be encouraged at the youth level to foster innovation and build a strong, internationally competitive economy. With Impact’s 2010 programs, the stage is set for youth to be involved in entrepreneurship today. Impact creates a platform to connect youth with successful industry leaders and entrepreneurs.
